spell checking kernewek

[pennfenten]

i have placed several cornish songs onto the english version of wikipedia, but since they are in kernewek (i have no idear which variant) i am unable to spellcheck them. i would be very grateful if someone would have a look over them for me. Bro Goth Agan Tasow[[1]], which also requires a small amount of translation work to be done as i have no translation of the 3rd verse. I want to suggest that any changes made to this page be automatically reverted unless they're made by somebody who's made contributions to other pages of this Wikipedia. Why the bleeding hell do people want to monkey around with our front page is they won't even condescend to help the rest of the Wiki grow?

(By the bye, I really don't care whether we link to Ido or not. I don't mind either way. I can see some argument for Galician being the non-Celtic language of a Celtic people, like Scots or French. Orthography

[pennfenten]

So, what is going to be done about the fact that there are at least three orthographies for Cornish in use and none of them are considered the standard or official form? --Iasos

You might want to speak to some of the users at the Alsatian language Wikipedia as they have exactly the same problem with there being no official written form of the language. However, they're still fairly new (16 articles) so perhaps they haven't found a solution yet either. Angela 03:23, 20 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I would but I don't think I'm in the position to be in the decision process, I'm just beginning to learn the language myself. I hope I didn't stifle anyone, though. I hope someone puts something up, in any orthography. Iasos
The Limburgish Wikipedia has now over 250 articles. There is no offical orthography. But it still works. Create some redirects here and there. Show some alternative spellings to the article. Just let everybody write her own dialect, and as long as it's mutually comprehensive the pedia'll be fine. 216.252.255.198 17:10, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Wow this reminds me of the situation on the Javanese Wikipedia. There is actually a standard orthography but it is considered defective by some, so people just use their own. This is a problem with us as the Javanese language is not an official language anymore since World War II. We also have two different language styles. I am curious how you'll handle this problem. Good luck! Meursault2004 20:35, 7 May 2005 (UTC)
How interesting that Javanese has similar issues – it seems to plague languages without official state sponsorship. Does Javanese have any recognition as a 'regional language', or anything similar?
Cornish has actually got not one, but three 'rival' standard orthographies, one of which comes in two distinct variants – three and a half orthographies, so to speak. A yll'ta skrifa neb Kernewek, Meursault? (Do you write any Cornish?) You are welcome in any case, but I've been trying to get other people to make kw contributions! QuartierLatin1968 15:59, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
Hey thanks for your reaction. No I am afraid I don't speak Cornish :-) I am just a visitor. Sometimes I browse 'exotic' language wikipedias just to get a look of them. Well Javanese is officially recognised as a 'regional language' of some parts of Indonesia. But sometimes it seems it is not more than mere lip service from the government. Maybe the main problem with Javanese is that most Javanese speakers are not well educated in their language due to government resources which are wanting. Meursault2004 08:39, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

Another comment—We've just started up the Norman Wikipedia, and we're wondering how to handle dialect issues. Our situation is slightly different as we have three standardized Insular (regional) Dialects (one of which is VASTLY more spoken than the other two), and a standardized system for converting speech into writing for the continental dialects (primarily two, one of which is more spoken than the other). We're likely to see primarily two fairly different dialects (and, it should be emphasized, orthographies) popping up all over the Wikipedia, and we're not sure how to handle naming of articles/having articles. It's like having two languages share the same Wikipedia, in a way. 208.187.181.2 10:14, 27 Meurth 2006 (UTC) (I'm Jade Knight, just stopping by)[reply]

Getting kw: off the ground

[pennfenten]

This noble project does appear to have stalled a little. I wish I could help but my Cornish is far from good enough. If I was able to contribute here is what I'd do:

  • To start with, focus on Cornwall-related and Cornish-related articles. It would be a mammoth effort to create a general purpose encyclopedia in Cornish, and people will just go and look things up in en: anyway where there are more contributors and things are debated in a lively fashion and kept up to date. If anyone has time to spare contributing to this Wikipedia then I would tentatively suggest that they would do more good writing about a Cornish village than trying to translate a major article at random.
  • Have an initial goal of writing a good extensive article on every decent-sized town in Cornwall, by which I mean better and more extensive than the English versions. This can be started by translating en:Truro, en:Falmouth, en:Penzance etc. and then adding loads of interesting content.
  • Try to write an article on every single village in Cornwall, as this will get Cornish speakers and learners very excited and eager to contribute when they see their little corner of the world featured on the internet — and in Cornish!
  • Take pictures of everywhere and put them up so that when people come to write articles on Cornwall in en: or anywhere else they will come to think of kw: as a useful source of images, thus building its reputation further.
  • Have the aim of writing really excellent quality articles at Kernow and Yeth Kernewek and other important subjects with relevance to Cornwall and its language.
  • Write articles on aspects of Cornish culture and make this a popular and talked about resource, and make it into something of importance in the Cornish language revival.

Just the ramblings of someone who likes to see minor language Wikipedias flourish. My apologies for trying to give advice when I'm not in a position to act on it myself. I hope I can provoke a discussion though. Best of luck!

Prederow yn kever an rannyethow ha trevow

[pennfenten]

Howdy, one and all. I think the point about getting an article up on every village in Cornwall is awesome; it would offer the chance for the kw wikipedia to offer something totally unique. My only caution is that people are going to think we're nuts if they find that the entire wikipedia is that provincial! But people are mostly going to check out a Cornish wikipedia if they're already into Celtic studies, Cornwall, Cornish heritage, and so on, so I guess it makes sense to cater to that niche to start with.

I can see how the dialect/orthography issue could get sticky in a hurry. Can I suggest some initial ground rules?

  • No DIY orthography. Honest spelling mistakes are one thing, but don't come up with your own system just to be 'different'. (On the other hand, if you were writing an article on Tim Saunders or Henry Jenner, you might wish to use their spelling systems if you feel able.)
  • Any recognized standard systems are welcome, including Kernewek Kemmyn, Unified Cornish, and Unified Cornish Revised. I'm going to reveal my ignorance and ask, is there a comparable standard for Modern Cornish/Carnoack in place? If not, of course, people can just use whatever Modern (Late) Cornish conventions are customary.
  • For aesthetic purposes, let's not begin a paragraph or sentence in one system and continue in another. If somebody's begun an article in Dialect A, try to add your bits and pieces in Dialect A; if you have to write in Dialect B, start a new section in that dialect.
  • No rewriting other people's articles in a different dialect and replacing them, unless it's just a stub and you're contributing a full article in earnest.

What do people think? (Re'm hatt, prag y skrifis vy henn oll yn sowsnek?) QuartierLatin1968 07:00, 29 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Wouldn't it be nicer to have all the articles in all the dialects? I don't know if it's possible and it'll take a considerable amount of time to reach that, but in the end it may be the nicest solution. Of course it would be useful if the visitor can choose the dialect and then all the pages would be displayed in that dialect if available. If not, then the page should be displayed in the dialect which is available. But I don't know if the Wiki-software has support for these kind of things.
Van der Hoorn 13:39, 20 Metheven 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Me neither, and unfortunately it's not always a simple toggle between dialects. Between Unified, UCR, and Kemmyn, yes for the most part, because the difference is orthographic; but Late also uses a very different grammar, and UCR sometimes veers somewhere in between.
If you can start a translation project, there are some templates and whatnot I've been playing with to facilitate that (see box tewas, {{lytherennans isos}}). I'd be happy to lend a hand; but I don't really have the materials to do a fool-proof translation except between Kemmyn and Unified. yn-medh Owen. 17:24, 21 Metheven 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll see what I can do, but I'm still trying to learn Kernewek myself. :)

NPOV dispute

[pennfenten]

was there any reason why npov wanted to do away with the content-rich mainpage (and all its anniversary and monthly templates) and revert to a very old and less interesting version?

I'm only speculating, but did it have something to do with being inclusive of all dialects? Personally I thought the rotating greeting was a rather attractive solution; but on the other hand the "content rich" version did seem almost like overkill. Can we work out some sort of compromise between the two? QuartierLatin1968 07:00, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

(English) WikiProject:Cornwall

[pennfenten]

I am a member of the Cornwall WikiProject on the English language Wikipedia (I hope that all contributors here will drop by.) I note that there seems to have been little happening here since late 2004; I would respectfully suggest that unless this Cornish Wiki shows some activity (and I can't navigate the blessed thing, I don't understand the road signs!) that the Wiki Foundation servers could be better used - as far as I am aware there is no Cornish speaker who isn't bi or multilingual and I would contest that anyone needs to use Cornish as a first language; it is rather a matter of choice. I support diversity, but feel that this entire Wiki takes up valuable resources. I invite comment at my talk page User:LessHeard vanU (find me quickly at the Cornwall or Geography of Penwith WikiProject pages).88.110.115.160 00:50, 17 Kevardhu 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Me being able to read English would help... I now see that there are some comments this year, so things do appear to be happening. Anyway, feel free to come over to either or both projects and nickcopy/translate any stuff you find useful. I would comment that I found this place existed when another project member linked the Bert Biscoe page - are there any pages here that could be translated and added into the English project(s)? 88.110.115.160 01:00, 17 Kevardhu 2006 (UTC) (LessHeard vanU)[reply]

Survey on this wikipedia

[pennfenten]

Hi, I'm sorry, but I cannot speak Kernowek. I therefore write in English, if it is okay. I am from Germany, Bremen, and I am studying linguistics and I have a seminar on language ausbau. This is, when a language doesn't have enough words to express all the modern things and it gets then upgrated with new expressions to fulfill it. And I want to study how Wikipedia can help on that and this is why I doing those surveys. I have two questions for you: 1. What do you think is the contribution of Wikipedia that your languages gets beter developped and gets new expressions for modern things, 2. How do you build new words, are there certain patterns or methods? (And would you be so kind and show me, where you are discussing on new words?) I would be really thankful, if there came some meanings and answers together. Thank you very much, Sincerely Zylbath 17:07, 13 Gwydngala 2011 (UTC)
