[This page contains my drafts for new key policies for the Cornish Wikipedia. They're really all aimed at growing the Cornish Wikipedia by allowing as many people as possible to contribute and negotiate the obvious potential disputes...]. The current policy page would have a general statement, to the effect that all en.wiki policies apply, with perhaps links to the really important ones (five pillars etc.). Then would be a list of the Cornish specific ones. All of these policies would be translated of course (perhaps in line with the English policy below...]
Medrasow Wikipedya Kernowek | Objectives for the Cornish Wikipedia
[golegi | pennfenten][This one is a bit vague - but it seemed a good idea to have a succinct statement that reflected the more unique aspects of Cornish - this is based on my own experience editing.. it could contain a general key objective (or two or three clear ones). It could also contain more finer points...

Brief description: A statement of the key aims of the Cornish Wikipedia.
Policy text:
The aim of the Cornish Wikipedia is to grow an encyclopedia comprising a wide range well structured, well illustrated articles in good Cornish, thus creating a resource of great benefit to learners and speakers of the language. This means that the same principles, guidelines and policies that guide the development of the

Eghennow Kernowek | Varieties of Cornish
[golegi | pennfenten]Policy Name: Wikipedia:Eghennow
Brief description: Establishes SWF-M as the orthography for the interface elements and develops the current "don't change an article's orthography" policy, to make it easier for potential editors to contribute.
Policy text:
This policy is aimed at negotiating the complex and potentially contentious issue of different varieties of Cornish being used in this Wikipedia. The term 'variety' is prefered and refers to variation in orthography (spelling), grammar constructions and vocabulary usageIt sets out collaborative and consensus-based mechanisms for dealing with different varieties of Cornish.
- The variety of Cornish used for the interface elements, policy pages, help pages and the Front Page is the Standard Written Form (SWF), using the 'main graphs' (ie <k>, <hw> and <kw> etc) and Middle Cornish variants, and using the recommended amendments made following the 2014 review.
- The preferred spelling for the language itself is 'Kernowek'.
- New articles may be written in any of the varieties listed below:
- SWF ('Main' or 'Traditional' (M/T) graphs, Middle or Late Cornish variants)
- Kernewek Kemmyn (KK)
- Kernowek Standard (KS)
- Unified Cornish (UC)
- Unified Cornish Revised (UCR)
- Late Cornish (LC), in any commonly used spelling.
- When the article title is significantly different in other varieties of Cornish, those variations should be given in bold in the first sentence. There is no need to gives variations that differ only in the use of M/T graphs.
- In order to make the search function as effective as possible, when article titles have variations in spelling, re-direct pages should be created for as many variations as possible, including variations in M/T graphs . See [this page], for instructions on how to do this.
- To help both readers and editors, all new articles should have the following statement indicating the orthography used in the article. "An erthygel ma yw skrifys yn KK." This should be right-aligned and placed between the end of the article but before the references.
- Anyone with a reasonable degree of fluency in written Cornish is both welcome and encoraged to edit any article. When doing so, they should follow these guidelines:
- If possible, make edits in the same variety of Cornish in which the article is written.
- If they are not able to do this (because they are not sufficiently familiar with the variety used), they are still welcome to edit the article, but should add the following banner template to the article: "This article has been edited using a different orthography. Someone familar with the original orthography [insert] is needed to standardise the article. In longer articles this banner may be placed above the relevent section, under its sub-heading." See [this page] for instructions on how to do this."
- Edited articles that contain more than one variety of Cornish should be added to the relevent category. For example a page written in KS but with edits made in SWF-T should be added to the category Pages in KS requiring standardising. See [this page] for instructions on how to do this
- All editors are encoraged to frequently view the list of those pages and standardise them to the variety of Cornish with which they are familiar. They should then remove them from the category.
- The policy of respecting the original orthography of the article is not in any way a recognition of any editor(s) as having ownership of the article, nor having any greater say over the form of Cornish it contains. The policy is designed to keep the number of articles with a mixture of different types to a minimum, for the benefit of the reader.
- The variety of Cornish used in an article can be changed by placing a proposal on the article's Talk Page, together with rationale. Examples of acceptable rationale might be the topic of the article, or the particular expertise of an available author). Reasonable rationale does not include, number of users of a particular variety, nor its argued authenticity. The change of an article to a different variety of Cornish should only be undertaken following consensus on the Talk Page.
Usyans Sowsnek yn Wikipedya ma | Using English in this Wikipedia
[golegi | pennfenten][this one is about ensuring that ensuring that potential editors find it as easy as possible to take part - if people have less fluency, I'd much rather they spend their energy in contributing towards articles in Cornish than in trying to wade through necessarily complex policies, help pages etc. - (most of these will be English anyway). Also, even speakers with a rudimentary fluency in written Cornish can (and should, in my opinion) be encouranged...]
Policy Name: Wikipedia:Sowsnek
Brief description: This policy is designed to encourage potential editors in contributing to the Cornish Wikipedia.
In order to grow, the Cornish Wikipedia needs to encourage as many people as possible to take part. This requires a pragmatic approach to the use of English behind the scenes. Naturally, many Cornish speakers (quite rightly) use Cornish as a default, whereever they can. However, the aim of building a quality encyclopedia comprised of well structured articles in good Cornish should always take priority. Please keep the following guidelines in mind when taking part:
- All article pages must be entirely in Cornish
- The front page must be in Cornish only (see next for exception).
- The Front Page should contain a clear visible link, in English, to a page with a bilingual statement encouraging participation, even from those with basic fluency.
- Key policies should be in both Cornish and English, with Cornish first, followed by the English translation below in italics.
- On Talk pages and community pages, use of English or Cornish is acceptable. Discussions should be in whichever language the participants will most clearly understand the dicussion.
Menystroryon | Admins
[golegi | pennfenten][I think this one only really needs at the moment to establish a process for appointing admins, everything else is going to be covered by the en.wiki ones (which I'm gradually working through to see what else we need to put in place]
Policy Name: Wikipedia:Menystroyon
Brief description: In general, administrators follow the same policies and processes as the English Wikipedia. This policy sets out the arrangements that are necessarily different for the Cornish Wikipedia due to the size/nature of it's community.
Policy text:
[work in all the links to the admin help pages, reading list, and other essentials]
Because the community is currently small, requests for Adminship (RfA) are decided with by WikiMedia stewards, who will likely award only a temporary Adminship (see below).
Process:
[golegi | pennfenten]Place a notice in An Tavern, under the heading 'Request for Adminship'; giving your reasons for your request.
The community will then add comments supporting (or not supporting) the request.
Once there is sufficient support, the requester should place a request on this page (instructions given on the top).
The
Granting of permanent adminship is likely to happen only with sufficiently active community. Although there is no hard and fast rule, this will require voting (or participation in nomination discussion by at least 6 users who have made at least 100 edits (prefereably more) on the Cornish Wikipedia.
