English: 'The Welsh at Mametz Wood' painted by Christopher Williams (1873-1934). Williams was commissioned by Secretary of State for War David Lloyd George. Williams, who was not an official war artist, was allowed to visit the site in November 1916. Williams had soldiers pose for his work, and completed preparatory sketches. The painting, itself, was completed by 1917. William's work depicts the brutual fighting undertake by the 38th (Welsh) Division at Mametz Wood on 11 July 1916 (Christopher Williams. BBC.
