English: Dulse for sale, Donaghadee Dulse is a seaweed - Palmaria palmata - which grows along the shoreline and is usually harvested by hand at low tide. Dried (usually wind dried by the shore or in a field), it is sold as a snack.
Having grown up with Dulse I had, for many years, presumed that it was harvested and sold anywhere with a coastline but it appears that (in the British Isles) it is a particularly Northern Irish delicacy. It is often sold in small shops, by way of an 'honesty box' by the roadside or, as in this case, a back yard (the Dulse is in the cardboard box on the right of picture). 20p a bag is cheap, though expect not to pay over 50p. The Wikipedia article at Dulse gives more information, including the fact that Dulse is also popular in Iceland and Canada's Atlantic coast. |
