Translation of the week

Currently we have started a project on meta.wikipedia to get an article translated in as many wikipedias as possible every week. The article will be about a subject that usually gets rarely translated and has a lot of links to other subjects. Currently we have no-one to translate in your language. If someone is interested to participate please see: meta:Translation of the week You can also submit articles from your own languages there that you think deserve translation, but have a small chance of it. The articles must not be to short and not to long and have lots of links to possible other articles! en:user:Waerth

Westcountry Brythonic

Ker QuartierLatin1968,

I note that you have contributed to a number of articles about celtic identities.

I should point out that there is currently a VfD debate on the "English" version of Wikipedia about the subject "Westcountry Brythonic" (ie the early Celtic language of south west Britain). This has been called into question because some (handfull) of people do not think it real or sufficiently important.

The current vote may delete this subject from wikipedia (because those [personal opinion] "pompous arses"" does not like it. If you wish you can help retain it on Wikipedia (I know you have contributed to its current form) by voting against its deletion.

I would rather have all modify whatever the current contents are to reach an acceptable compromise than have a handful of twits delete it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Westcountry_Brythonic

I can see you have contribued to this issue in the past. Do you wish to assist this time?

I wish I could say this in Westcountry Brythonic but sadly I am not fluent enough.

Fatla genough-why!

Simon

How Quartier! I am learning Cornish and decided I'd love to help as much as I possibly could with the Kernewek Wikipedia. I recently am working on the Yyrgynya Wést page and was wondering if you could give me some feedback on it. Like I said, I'm still at the primary level. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help contribute! --Caponer 02:53, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Owen, I feel terribly bad for that awful translation of mine. While I'm trying to learn Cornish on my own, I've been using the translator as a crutch but now I realize how faulty of a decision that is. I was attempting to translate parts of the English West Virginia article at [1]. Once again, I apologize and will try to master Cornish on my own without the aid of that sham Cornish translator. I didn't mean to come off as some vandal, I've learned my lesson not to use the translating software as an aid. Thanks for the welcome. --Caponer 18:18, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
How Owen, until I attain that elusive "good working grasp of Cornish grammar", which won't be for awhile :), I would most definitely love to work on translating templates and stubs for states, provinces, etc. Let me know if there are any other tasks I could work on when they arise. I created a Cornish prototype for the Template:US state by "borrowing" and translating the beautiful light-blue French infobox for the Canadian provinces ;) I was unsure of the Cornish words for "Governor" and "US Senators". If you feel and the other Kernewek editors feel it's sufficient and grammatically correct, I'll go ahead and fill in the information for US state stubs. I really appreciate your acceptance and patience with me! I grew bored of English Wikipedia and have been wanting to help the Celtic versions reach the 100,000 article mark!! --Caponer 01:45, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
I have that tendency to do so ;) I was running into some confusion concerning the term "Senedh", but I agree that Mr. George's equivalent for Congress (Kuntelles) will do. I decided to go ahead and go with Vyrjynia over Pow an Werhes and Pow an Wyrghes as I felt the full literal "Land of the Virgin" would be a bit much (and it made me chuckle). Pow am Wyrghes West is also a mouthful :P Gwlas could still describe West Virginia as it is semi-autonomous nestled in the "hollers" of Appalachia :P I am currently working on an article for English Wikipedia on the current use of Elizabethan English in some mountain communities of West Virginia. Who knows, maybe there a few mountaineer Cornish speakers hiding in the hills as well. --Caponer 07:58, 9 February 2006 (UTC) AIM: MapnitNGA
Would you happen to know the Cornish terms for Co-Prince and Episcopal for the stub on the Prynseth Andorra? I was also unsure of Cornish for "regent" in the Liechtenstein infobox so I used the German term by default. --Caponer 20:05, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
Your thoughts on these states' names before I create stubs and infoboxes: Template:USPoliticalDivisions? ;) --Caponer 21:40, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Planets

How Owen, I just crafted a stub for Mergher with a template. Were you looking for a Cornish translation of one of the English planet templates or for me to duplicate the templates for Dor ha Meurth? I also wanted to thank you for assisting me with the US Political Divisions template!! Do you think Colorado and Connecticut would translate into Kolorado and Konnektykut (or something similar)? I was also curious if there was another Cornish term for Hampshire? I was going to finish the stubs for US states as well and wanted to be sure before I attempted them. Let me know about these and the planets and I'll get right on 'em! --Caponer 20:18, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Greetings QuartierLatin1968, could you help me create a stub for this article? - It is based on the English article. 3-5 lines would be sufficient enough. Please. Your help would be gratefully appreciated. (I do not know what the correct title should be). Thanks -- Jose77, 2 March 2006

I'm back

I apologize for the delay in my response Owen, I got busy with English Wikipedia and then with my "real life" ;) I have neither at the moment but I'm attempting to order Williams' Gerlyver Sawsnek-Kernowek. I know that a lot of languages adopt the names of places rather than "translate" those names into their own language, but I find it more interesting to cornicize :) If the names of some of these places make certain Cornish speakers scratch their heads, it may just force them to contribute. --Caponer 21:29, 6 Meurth 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was just merely compensating for the time that I was away from Cornish Wikipedia ;) I had to make it up. (Once you transcribe one page, you tend to want to do another, and another...etc). It's especially gratifying when you see the number of articles grow. My Williams' should be here shortly! Any color requests for the Caribbean?

As per the other thing, I love all of the changes you made to the various commands and I can't see anything else at this moment that needs fixin', but if something catches my eye I'll be sure to let you know (although it will probably catch yours first). How Owen, for some odd reason I'm in the mood to create articles like this for Cornish Wikipedia and a Cornish version of the English template. I've started one in progress here. More from the Jade Knight

Hey, noticing that you're a Sysop, mind if I ask a question? How do we get the Wikipedia to recognize native words for "Category", "Wikipedia", and "Template"? (ie, the Norman equivalents, instead of the English—so I can make a stub template named "Patron:Choutchette" rather than "Template:Choutchette"). We're absolutely brand new, and I don't know how a lot of this works. 208.187.181.2 09:42, 28 Meurth 2006 (UTC) =nrm:User:C'valyi d'Jade[reply]

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, I can't seem to edit those templates (only "view source"). Currently, we have no admins or Sysops on the Norman wikipedia. Hey Owen, would you like me to go ahead and affix this to all of the country stub articles, replacing the little pick axe? --Caponer 17:59, 28 Meurth 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I went ahead and finished inserting the stubs for the remaining years of the 20th century ;) When you get a chance, could you do me a favor and start a "List of popes" article so that I may place my pope chart in it? I wasn't sure what to name it or how the introduction should read. I started a chart of Popes with Cornish names in my sandbox and will slowly keep adding to it little by little until I work my way back to Sen Peder. Let me know what you think of the pope chart and if any of the columns should be hacked off! :) --Caponer 22:05, 28 Meurth 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Papal names

If only their regnal names hadn't ever deviated from Jowann and Pawl ;) I went ahead and made some of the fixes you suggested on the talk page, but was curious how names like Honorius and Hadrianus were treated (and any other name where H precedes a vowel). I assigned Adrian to Hadrianus and Honori temporarily to Honorius, but would it be Kosher Kemmyn to assign it Onori, instead? --Caponer 21:02, 1 Ebryl 2006 (UTC)

Cornish Language

Hello QuartierLatin, I'm quite new to the Cornish language version of Wikipedia, although I have contributed to the English language version. I have noticed that you seem to be the major contributor to the Cornish language version, and I would like to be able to help. Unfortunately I am unable to speak Cornish, and I am contacting you to see if you would be able to help me with learning. Although I grew up in Cornwall, my knowledge of the language is limited to the few phrases known by most Cornishmen ('onen hag oll' and 'kernow bys vyken!' for example). I moved away from Cornwall to study in Cardiff, Wales, so I am reasonably familiar with the Welsh language style, which I understand is supposed to be related to Cornish. As Cornish langauge classes are a rarity outside of Cornwall and London, would you be able to recommend any books/websites to help me learn? Any info you can give would be great, I was wondering if the pronunciation of certain letters is similar/same as Welsh letters (e.g the 'dd' sound). Just out of interest, are you based in Cornwall, or Cornish youself, and how did you manage to learn the language?

Thank you for any help, you can contact me through my talk page

Alex

Hello Owen!
Thank you for your reply, its obvious that you certainly know what you're talking about! I intend to buy some books (right after uni exams!), and have looked at those websites - most helpful. I look forward to learning the lingo of my ancestors, and hopefully in the not-too-distant future, I'll be a fluent, regular contributor to the Kernewek Wikipedia!
Many Thanks,

Quote from Jimmy Wales: Languages which are "more important than" Cornish

Hi Owen,

I happened to stumble upon this article and was a bit surprised by how Jimbo Wales talked about the Cornish Wikipedia. Sure, it may not have an audience of millions of children in developing nations, but it has been shown many times that linguistic diversity serves a purpose and is of great benefit to the world. I, for one, find it insulting that he would say any Wiki is "more important" than any other one. But then, Jimbo and I have never seen eye-to-eye. He weaseled his way out of his original "Everybody should get an encyclopedia in his/her own language" remark by amending it post ipso facto (like, a couple of years after!) to say that he meant to only include those speakers of languages with over 1 million speakers. Well, Jimmy, 6% of the people on Earth speak a language native to less than 1 million people. A full 1% speak a language native to less than 100 000 people, and there are still over 8 million people who speak a language with less than 10 000 native speakers. His current plan is going to simply leave many people on Earth out of the loop.

I think he's more worried about the idea of having a Wiki in every language on Earth -- a total of somewhere between 3000 and 10000 Wikis. But he doesn't need to worry. By the time somebody gets around to requesting every last one, most of them will probably no longer be spoken -- out of the nearly 7000 languages counted by the Ethnologue, approximately 550 were at last count spoken by less than 100 souls. --Node ue 02:07, 12 Du 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for the link; I found the article most interesting. However, I'd rather not get involved in a controversy for or against Jimbo Wales. From what I understood, Wales meant that the Wikipedias that he hoped would reach the 250,000 article mark were those with 1 million speakers; as long as he's not actively proposing to suppress the other Wikipedias, I'm not bothered. The article does make a fair point that African languages are very under-served.... yn-medh Owen. 13:17, 12 Du 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cornish templates

Hi QuartierLatin1968, On my userpage I have some userboxes indicating languages I speak, as well as languages I would like to learn. I've used the template {xx-0} for these languages, but there isn't one for Cornish. I was wondering if you could, as someone who seems proficient at Cornish, translate the following for me into Cornish so I can make a template for {kw-0}. This is the text: "This user does not understand Cornish (or understands it with considerable difficulty)."

This would be a real help, I could update each language as I become more proficient.

Hi! To give a bot the flag you have to use the special page: Special:Makebot. Unfortunately only bureaucrats can use that page. MediaWiki interface for Cornish

Hi QuartierLatin1968. I see you have in the past done some Cornish localisation of the interface of MediaWiki by editing pages in the namespace MediaWiki. I was wondering if you knew that localisation in this local Wikipedia means that only this Wikipedia can benifit of your efforts for the Cornish language.

I am one of the administrators of Betawiki. In this wiki we facilitate localisation of any language for MediaWiki. I was wondering if you were willing to go over there and work on the localisation of Cornish. From there we will add your translations to the source code of MediaWiki, so that anyone can benefit from your efforts (for example on Wikimedia Commons) and those installing MediaWiki outside Wikimedia projects.

Currently about 4.43% of the core messages for MediaWiki are available in Cornish. Most of them were imported from your work here.

If you personally do not want to make the effort, for whichever reason, please do make an effort to try and find 2 or 3 other users that are willing to work on the generic translation for the MediaWiki interface on Betawiki. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you very much for your current and past efforts to put Cornish on the digital map. Cheers! --MF-Warburg 17:13, 5 Du 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pennfolen redesign

Hi there, I've whipped up a proposal for the Cornish Wikipedia main page, you can see it here. I wanted to contribute to the Cornish Wikipedia and I know actual content would probably be much more useful, but I'm afraid my Cornish is currently limited to a few generic sentences, so I thought I'd help out the best way I can. Of course certain things will need translating etc, but please tell me what you think! Regards, --Joowwww 18:06, 14 Gwyngala 2008 (UTC)

It looks really great! But there are probably just not enough users to really sustain a "featured article", "featured picture" or "did you know" section. I tried to start a featured article thing once, but there was no one else voting. I love the look, however! ☮ yn-medh Owen. 13:42, 25 Gwyngala 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! I did realise that but for some reason I didn't mention it. Perhaps there could be just a few paragraphs on Cornwall where "featured article" goes, a rotating "image of the month" can be set up that would require minimal updating, and the "did you know" section I thought could just be some facts about the Cornish language. It doesn't have to updated very often, if at all, but it just adds some content to the main page. I can start implementing a test page if you like. Regards, --Joowwww 21:16, 25 Gwyngala 2008 (UTC)
